Ottawa Art Scene: Feb 23 - Feb 29

As Reading Week wraps up this weekend, lots of students will probably still be out of town, but if you’re around, why not check out these events!

On Saturday night, Lemonjello productions is throwing another ‘pARTy’ - “You Make My Art Beat.” Come for the art - mixed media, prints, paintings - in the afternoon, and stay for the “fun and misadventures” (yes please!) that evening. You Make My Art Beat, Saturday, February 25, noon-5pm; 7pm-onwards, 27 Goulburn Ave., FREE.

It’s also Nuit Blanche in Montreal on Saturday night. If you want to make the trek, the reward is tons of great contemporary art hidden (and not so hidden) around the city. Brave the cold for the chance to see installations and performances around the city - from the Plateau to the Olympic Park, including one by Milutin Gubash at Place Bonaventure in the Art Souterraine section (the only warm part of Nuit Blanche). Don’t stress about seeing everything, just choose a couple good ones (the Belgo Building is a good bet) and have fun! Nuit Blanche, Montreal (Downtown, Old Montreal, Pleateau), Saturday, February 25, FREE.

The new show at AXENEO7 just opened this week, so head over to Gatineau for “Rober Racine & Karina Pawlikowski.” Racine’s images, drawings, and photographs explores diverse subjects as the dictionary and the Lunar Module, while emerging artist Pawlikoski’s work address ideas of deterioration left behind by markings and crossings. Rober Racine & Karina Pawlikowski, AXENEO7 (80 Hanson St., Gatineau, QC), Until March 25, FREE.

If you’re looking for something special to do on the elusive February 29th, you can head over to the University of Ottawa for an Artist’s Talk by Carol Waino entitled “Copies and Clever Cats: Benjamin, fairy tale, and globalization.” Diana Nemiroff curated a solo show of Waino’s paintings of narratives culled from illustrated books and fairy tales in 2010, so it will be interesting to hear what she’s been up to in the last couple of years. The talk is part of the University of Ottawa’s Visiting Artist’s Program. Carol Wainio Artist’s Talk, Wednesday, February 29th, uOttawa Dept. of Visual Arts (100 Laurier Ave. E.), 12:30pm, FREE.

That’s it for this week! Have a great weekend.
